Her joy,
a stone path
a stone path
sits unevenly in the earth
stained and mossy
cedar and honey locust
centinels,
cast cool shade
someone carried stones here
pushed them into the ground
to carry
to lead
to help
many years ago
warmed petunias infuse the air
surround the porch steps
surround the porch steps
mown grass promises
no matter where it leads
the path is the joy
put your foot on it

Very nice. The most Taoist thing I've read in a while.
ReplyDeleteMy own mental misstep saw me tripping on "centinel", not being familiar with that being an antiquated spelling for "sentinel." In the moments between reading it and looking it up, some part of my mind tried to speculate on the possible definition, and for some reason I'd thought it was referring to the stones. Sure, I know it's referencing the trees, but all of this came through in that first flash of reading, and those first impressions stick worse than price stickers.
I'm taking it that "many years ago" is all meant to be part of the previous thought, concerning the placement of the stones. It finds me wanting a little more of a space between that and "warmed petunias..." which strikes me as bringing us back to the present, and the call to find or make our own path. (I know, the blog's software limitations get in the way of getting things placed where I'd prefer much of the time.)
