30 things about a house I used to live in
![]() |
When I lived there, the exterior was gray asphalt shingle, and there was a big covered front porch and a couple of big trees |
I drove by the house where I lived in 1974-75. I will list below memories associated with that house.
1. Poppy our male gray tabby kitten. I'm convinced his kitten scratches while I was pregnant made me develop cat allergy.
2. Pandora, another kitten we later found, but whom we had to give away because Poppy always chased her under the sofa. That's no life.
3. Red Rose Speedway, Shawn Phillips, and Hunky Dory.
4. Buying a stereo system "on time".
5. Insane yellow and orange trim in the kitchen, my idea.
6. A big water bug crawling up through the drain of the tub as I began to step into it, heavily pregnant.
7. White cottage curtains. Making curtains for the baby stroller.
8. Hand me down furniture, including the ugliest sofa you ever saw.
9. Making a tissue paper collage of sunset with blackbirds to put over the slanted ceiling of my baby's bed.
10. Baking Cornish game hens. Frying okra. Squash casseroles...
11. Husband making oxtail soup.
12. Hyperemesis gravidarum.
13. Craving salads with Old Dutch dressing and hard-boiled eggs for every meal. Could have drunk that stuff. It was hard being so sick.
14. Planting Balsam and Sweet Williams.
15. Getting a grocery cart from the nearby Kroger to wheel our laundry, including diapers, to the laundromat, and baby in a pumpkin seat all nestled in.
16. People coming over with their guitars to jam, making snacks for them.
17. Husband making me little cakes from the extra batter left over from legit cakes made at Favorite Bakery on Cherokee Street. Then he'd layer them with whipped cream and strawberries or bananas. I loved finding one in the fridge, occasionally.
18. Sunsets with cicadas and plums on the Italian plum tree.
19. The neighbor's white ducks quacking and bathing in their "bathtub".
20. The dirt-floored cellar, and the winter the wind kept blowing out the pilot light and causing the furnace to go out, and having to bundle up to go outside and down there, to fix it.
21. My complete 1940's Nancy Drew collection lining the shelf in the staircase.
22. Buying my first Christmas tree ornaments for my first Christmas tree. Magical.
23. Learning to drive in a Pacer at the driving school.
24. Buying a red VW hatchback from Quality Volkswagen, just down the street, then trying to return it because it didn't run right. Yes, didn't know nuthin' back then.
25. Trading in the red hatchback for an Orange bug...
26. First Halloween on my own and carving elaborately grimacing jack'o'lanterns.
27. Pyrex Coffee pot and cream and strawberries bought in February and Bailey Farms dairy chocolate milk.
28. Diaper service. What a dream that was at the time. Pampers were not an option, they were extravagant. We bought them once for a camping trip.
29. Saving up to buy a velvet paisley purse from Penney's on Cherokee Street.
30. Making macrame plant holders to sell at a florists off Cherokee Street.
